Combination Endorsement Practice Test

After uncoupling a trailer, the correct action is to set the tractor in neutral. This step is vital for safety and stability. Setting the tractor in neutral ensures that the vehicle won’t inadvertently move while the trailer is being inspected. If the tractor remains in gear, there is a risk of unintended movement, which could lead to accidents or injuries during the inspection process.

Additionally, while engaging the trailer brakes, checking tire pressure, and unloading cargo might be relevant actions for overall safety and maintenance procedures, they do not directly follow the uncoupling process in the same manner. Engaging the trailer brakes may be an important step, but it typically pertains to securing the trailer after it's disconnected and not what should immediately follow uncoupling. Checking tire pressure is essential as part of regular maintenance but is not specifically tied to the act of uncoupling the trailer. Unloading cargo, while necessary at times, is not an immediate next step but rather a part of the overall operations that may not necessarily coincide with the inspection of the trailer itself.
